Hamed Amiri is one of Daring to Dream’s Ambassadors, together with his brother Hessam Amiri.
The Amiri Family
The three brothers of the Amiri family are Hussein (the eldest who was born with congenital heart disease), Hamed and Hessam. Together with their parents they were forced to flee from their country, Afghanistan, to seek sanctuary in the UK, and essential medical care for Hussein.
The family settled in Cardiff. Hussein passed away in 2018, having enjoyed many good years.
Hamed reflects on his emotional journey as he supported his brothers and parents.
“Supporting my brother Hussein through his journey with ACHD (Adult Congenital Heart Disease) was both a privilege and a profound emotional challenge.
As his brother, my role was multifaceted—being his confidant, advocate but also his younger brother.
In our family, the dynamics naturally shaped my responsibilities: bridging the language gap for our parents, ensuring they understood medical complexities, and acting as a shield to protect each other from overwhelming fear and grief.
Emotionally, this experience was a rollercoaster
At times, I felt immense strength from being able to support Hussein, but also a deep helplessness when nothing I could do could alleviate his pain. Hussein’s resilience inspired me, yet I often struggled with my own silent grief, balancing hope with the reality of his condition.
Our parents carried an immense emotional weight, often quietly. I saw their heartbreak masked by strength, their unwavering love entwined with fear, and their determination to remain hopeful for Hussein’s sake.
Compassion and support from the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Team (ACHD)
The ACHD team’s compassion was invaluable; they didn’t just treat Hussein but supported us all, offering reassurance and making space for our emotions.
The Boy with Two Hearts
For me, writing and co-producing The Boy with Two Hearts became a healing process. A process that allowed me to express what words often couldn’t.
Telling our story has not only honoured Hussein’s legacy but has also underscored the importance of hope and resilience.”
