Creating a Space to Sing

Daring to Dream, the Emotional Health Charity is piloting different ways for those living with illness to come together over a shared interest, helping build supportive relationships within their community, with people like them; relationships that also lead to making spaces to talk, when they want to talk or listen.

Yesterday, we were delighted to have the first of three pilot singing workshops, which took place in The Sanctuary at University Hospital of Wales.

The workshops are being led by Alicia Stark from Choirs For Good and have been opened to patients from cardiology and nephrology.

It was such fun! Amazingly we cracked a very acceptable rendition of Van Morrison’s ‘Brown-Eyed Girl’ together as well as our warmup and other exercises! All in one hour! Impressive work indeed!

Best of all was the smiles on everyone’s faces at the end of that hour. Music can be such a wonderful tool to benefit emotional health. It’s a way of expressing emotions, managing stress and socially connecting with others.

Music matters in so many ways, to so many:

Bono: “Music can change the world because it can change people”

Leo Tolstoy: “Music is the shorthand of emotion”

Victor Hugo: “Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.”

Shania Twain: “Music is a great natural high and a great natural escape.”

Huge thanks to the Chaplaincy, the Patient Experience Team, the Cardiothoracic and Nephrology Directorates at University Hospital of Wales for all your support.

Thank you too Alicia Stark and Choirs For Good – we really hope that this is a pilot that will grow and grow #smallsteps

Each workshop is a #standalone – if you want to take part in future workshops please email barbarachidgey@daringtodream.wales.

There is no cost. You will be very welcome.
