The family settled in Cardiff. Hussein passed away in 2018, having enjoyed many years.
Hessam reflects on his emotional journey as he supported his brothers and parents.
“Since childhood, I was at Hussein’s side, supporting him; we were an extended support system for him, even when he didn’t want it.
As brothers, we had an unspoken bond. There when needed, always. Easily reachable, ready to step in. “Brothers forever” wasn’t just a saying for us, it was how we lived.
At critical moments, we took turns; one checking on Mom, the other on Dad. We kept them calm, informed. It became routine: giving updates, reassuring, making sure they didn’t overthink, worry too much. We took turns translating, liaising with doctors, ensuring our parents understood everything, felt reassured.
Dad coped in his own way, going up stairs, walking every hospital floor, managing his anxiety.
Even when we were scared ourselves, we tried not to let it show.”
We supported each other
“We supported each other; we had an unspoken understanding.
We were always there for one another and for our parents. We gave each other space when needed, made sure we were available when things got tough. We shared everything, especially during emergencies, we’d communicate openly, clearly, knowing we could rely on one another completely.
One of the hardest things to witness was the pain in my parents’ eyes. Watching them struggle to process the situation and lose hope was heart-breaking. For them, it was especially challenging to articulate their feelings, compounded by language barriers.
They found it difficult to grasp Hussein’s legacy, what he left behind, the lives he touched. After Hussein passed, social media was filled with tributes, of how he had inspired and supported others. These tributes helped them understand the profound impact Hussein had had on others.
This legacy brought them a sense of pride, amidst their grief.”
The Boy with Two Hearts (Hussein)
“Writing and co-producing The Boy with Two Hearts was incredibly therapeutic
The first time I saw a full rehearsal, stripped of fancy lights or effects, I broke down in tears. Seeing our story unfold on stage felt like a way to say goodbye, while also reliving both the joyful and painful moments we experienced together.
Sharing our journey resonated with people facing similar challenges, helping them feel less alone.
It allowed me to learn about myself and my emotions, making it easier to keep talking, turning our story into one that inspires and helps others.
Just as Hussein’s legacy continues to do.”
